Save money on data by choosing the right phone

Posted by: Frugalis.ca
With wireless data you can browse the internet, send and receive email and instant message, view and edit attachments, upload pictures, stream video, challenge others to an online game, use mobile applications such as BlackBerry Messenger, Cineplex Mobile and much more.

But how much data do you really need?  Typically most mobile phone users use less than 500MB per month and if your phone has Wi-Fi built it, you can surf to your hearts content on any free Wi-Fi network.  So stick with the lowest data plan, get a smartphone with Wi-Fi capabilities and save money.

Another way to save money is by choosing the right mobile phone.  Here’s a breakdown of how the Apple iPhone and the BlackBerry Torch compare with 500MB of data usage:

BlackBerry Torch Apple iPhone
Text / Emails 5,000 2,500
Web Pages 4,000 2,000
Photo Uploads / Downloads 300 100
Minutes on YouTube 50 50

Of course there are other reasons for choosing a phone besides data, but if data costs are important to you, the BlackBerry smartphones might be the way to go.

Choosing the right phone and data plan can save you hundreds each year, so before you commit to that contact be sure you know what you are getting.
