Credit Cards – The Cash Back Roundup

Posted by: Frugalis.ca

If you are good with budgeting and paying your credit card balance in full, then you should consider making all your purchases with a credit card which has added incentives. Typically, there are three incentives in the market: Value Added Services, Rewards Points, and Cash Back.

Value added services include: extended warranties, travel insurance, and loss of job protection. Most cards offer some basic level of value added service, but these services are usually fee based. Reward points can come in the form of third party points (e.g., Air Miles or Aeroplan Miles) or vendor points (e.g., RBC Rewards Points or Shoppers Optimum Points). This article will feature the latter incentive – Cash Back.

There are four major cash back credit cards to choose from in Canada:

The big banks offer variations on these basic cards, but to make things simple we will stick with the no fee versions.

BMO CashBack Mastercard

Features:

  • No annual fee
  • 19.5% interest rate on unpaid purchase balances
  • 21 payment grace period
  • 0.5% Cash Back (e.g., $0.50 back on each $100 spent)
  • 1.5% Cash Back on purchases at Shell Canada, National Car Rental, and Alamo Car Rental

Notables:

  • 25% off at National Car Rental and Alamo Car Rental

CIBC Dividend VISA Card

Features:

  • No annual fee
  • 19.5% interest rate on unpaid purchase balances
  • 21 payment grace period
  • Tier one – 0.25% rebate for net annual purchases up to $1,500
Tier two – 0.50% rebate for net annual purchases from $1,500.01 to $3,000
Tier three – 1% rebate for net annual purchases over $3,000

Notables:

  • 20% off at AVIS Car Rental

Scotiabank Moneyback VISA

Notables:

  • None

TD Rebate Rewards VISA

Features:

  • No annual fee
  • 19.75% interest rate on unpaid purchase balances
  • 21 payment grace period
  • Tier one – 0.50% rebate for net annual purchases up to $3,000
Tier two – 1% rebate for net annual purchases over $3,000

Notables:

  • Budget Rent-A-Care Preferred Rates

Best overall card: TD Rebate Rewards VISA Card

Why? It starts off at a 0.50% tier rate rather than the 0.25% rate which the CIBC Dividend VISA Card and the Scotiabank Moneyback VISA offers and bumps up to 1% unlike the BMO CashBack MasterCard.

Runner up: CIBC Dividend VISA Card

Why? The CIBC Dividend VISA Card is the same as the Scotia Moneyback VISA Card, however CIBC has discounts at AVIS Car Rentals and has a larger ATM network than Scotiabank. If you have a CIBC banking account this will matter when it comes down to saving on ATM fees because you can use your VISA card as a regular bank card to withdraw cash from your non-credit card accounts if you link up your CIBC accounts.

Notable mention: BMO CashBack MasterCard

Why? You get 1.5% cash back at Shell Canada. If you go to Shell Canada to use your Air Miles Card, then you can get double the rewards by using this card (Cash Back + Air Miles Points).

Needs fixing: Scotia Moneyback VISA Card

Why? There is nothing unique about this card. Similar to the CIBC Dividend VISA Card (see above). Scotiabank’s answer to this uninspired card is the Scotiabank Momentum VISA Card, which is a contender, but has an annual fee which disqualifies it from this comparison. Seems like Scotiabank is hoping people ignore the Scotia Moneyback VISA Card and opt for the fee based Scotiabank Momentum VISA Card.
